Rev. Stephen Yates was the son of Lemuel and Lucinda (Norwood) Yates. He was the husband of Catherine (Bush) Yates. He was a Local Preacher in the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Northern Christian Advocate
January 27, 1876
YATES.--Rev. Stephen Yates, a Local Preacher, died at his home near Slaterville, December 31, 1875, aged 76 years.
This worthy, and well known brother, to many an itinerant minister, has after many a hard and well-fought battle, fallen at his post, with his armor on all bright and gleaming. "He ceased at once to work and live." He and his companion, who still lives to mourn in solitude for the absent one gave their hearts to God at a camp-meeting held on the Norris farm, near Slaterville, fifty-two years ago. Our brother soon became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and remained a faithful and true Christian until called to his reward in heaven. Nearly all the time during his long Christian life he had official relations to the Church, either as class-leader, trustee, steward or Exhorter, and for several years past has had a license to preach the Gospel. Bro. Yates was a good husband, a kind parent, a respected neighbor and citizen. He left no dying testimony, and no farewell word to surviving friends or he died suddenly at work, without a moment's warning, but his life of over fifty years in the service of the Master is more cheering, and has better effect upon the world and gives more comfort to friends than any dying testimony possibly could. He has made his record and though dead he yet speaketh. We have no doubt that with him sudden death was instant glory. He has gone! No more shall we see the fire of God's love "in his eye, and the glow of heaven upon his brow, and hear him say, (as he often did), "glory to God." He was the oldest member of the Church on Slaterville Charge--the fathers are passing away--what a grand reunion on the other side of the river with the old warriors he will have. We ask the prayers of the Church in behalf of the widow and a large family of children, thay they may be greatly supported in this time of deep affliction. May they be prepared to meet him in the other life is our prayer.
