George F. Carter, born near Martinsville, Aug. 29, 1874.
He was the fifth son of E. H. and Margaret Carter, the latter who is still living and often says, "George was always good, causing me so little trouble when a boy."
He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Nancy E. Thomasson, three children, Julia, Elizabeth and James, an aged mother and the following brothers and sisters:
Messrs. W. H., J. W., R. L. E. T. and C. R. Carter, Mrs. J. E. Carter and Mrs E. G. Holt. His father, Mr. E. H. Carter, one brother, Mr. S. J. Carter and one sister, Mrs. J. H Clift preceded him to the grave.
Mr. Carter had been a citizen of Martinsille for about sixteen years and was faithfully discharging his duties as police and deputy-Sheriff when he was over powered and killed June 14th, 1919.
The funeral services were conducted at his home on Gravely St., Sunday, June 15th, 1919, and burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
