Graduated from Hampden-Sydney College,became a lawyer and practiced in Prince Edward County.
When the Civil War began,he was appointed captain of the 23rd Virginia Infantry.
Wounded at the battle of Antietam, he was promoted to major in 1863. After a promotion to lieutenant colonel,was captured at the battle of Spotsylvania Court House. Later exchanged, he commanded his regiment at the surrender at Appomattox.He returned to Prince Edward County, and returned to his law practice and to farming. He served as a trustee of Hampden-Sydney College.Married Florida F. Flournoy on December 24,1863,a daughter of Martha W.Flournoy. He died in Prince Edward County.
