John Kerr moved to Portland as a young child with his family. He grew up in the Sellwood area, where they had a small farm. John and his twin Eleanor were the youngest of four children. He attended Sellwood Grade School and Washington High School on Stark Street (now an event venue called Revolution Hall).

Like many young men did during the Great Depression, John found work building trails for the Civilian Conservation Corps.

John married his wife Marie in 1940, on the eve of World War II.

He was drafted into the US Army during the war. He served at several locations including Texas, New York and a remote assignment in the Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska.

After the war, John and Marie returned to Portland, where they raised two daughters. He worked as a clock repair person at a local jewelry store. He later worked for Multnomah County.

John and Marie enjoyed attending events at the Scottish Lodge and belonged to Westmoreland Presbyterian Church.
