CIVIL WAR VETERAN.
William was born in Bern, Switzerland and emigrated to the US, eventually settling in Port Jervis, NY. He served in the Civil War as a member of the 124th Regiment, New York State Volunteers. He was a member of the Carroll-Van Etten Post No. 279 G.A.R.

William met and married Mary Hoffman of Port Jervis on 6 May 1869. They raised a large family including sons, William, George, Theodore, Henry, James and Oliver, and daughters Ida Balmos Havens and [Grace] Elizabeth Shaefer.

He was also survived by three brothers, Peter (resident of Rochester), and Fred & Andrew of Port Jervis.

William made his living as a trainman on the NY division of the Erie Railroad.

Reverend Paul Kasten conducted the funeral services.
