Gerald Conner died while he was on vacation in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jerry had been ill for a year. He had been undergoing treatment for cancer and knew his life was going to end soon. Jerry decided to go on vacation to the city he loved one last time.
Jerry became gravely ill while on vacation and was taken to the hospital. His parents were called and his dad flew to Las Vegas and a short time later Jerry was gone from this world.
Jerry was flown home and the services were held August 7, 2004 at 11 a.m. Officiating was Rev. Lawrence Detruf. Jerry was laid to rest at Monroe Twp. Cemetery Monroe, MI
Surviving are his parents Luther O. Conner Jr. and Esther P. Fisher Conner, brothers Al and Lou Conner.
Jerry worked as a janitor for Monroe Public Schools for over 20 years. He was a good friend to many and would help everyone in any way he could. He was friendly, had a wonderful sense of humor, and was well thought of in the city of Monroe. He was never married and never had any children but loved children just the same.
I had no idea when I drove Jerry to the airport that it would be the last time I would see him alive. I didn't know it would be the last time I would call him brother. I didn't know that it would be his last smile from him I would ever see again. Jerry was like a brother to my husband and me. I was proud to call him brother even though it was not by blood.
I found this poem for Jerry
Just a prayer from the family to you,
Just a memory fond and true,
In our hearts you will stay forever,
Because we thought the world of you.
It was a sudden parting,
Too bitter to forget,
Those who loved you dearly,
Are the ones who can't forget.
We often sit and think of you,
And think of how you died,
To think you could not say goodbye,
Before you closed your eyes.
The blow was hard,
The shock severe,
Our loss is great, we'll not complain,
But trust in God to meet again.
