John T. Baxter Sr.
Retired fireman and machinery corporation worker John Thomas Baxter Sr., 69, of Big Sandy died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, at his residence.
His wife Rose Bomar Baxter survives. They were married on Jan. 26, 1990.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at McEvoy Funeral Home.
Jerome Hancock will officiate. Burial will follow in Manley's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in south Henry County.
Members of the Big Sandy Volunteer Fire Department have been named as pallbearers.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Thursday.
Born Jan. 21, 1939, in Paducah, he was the son of Jesse B. and Sybil Cunningham Baxter, now both deceased.
Baxter was a graduate of Tech High School in Memphis. He retired as a captain of Memphis Fire Department Station 32 after 30 years. He also retired after 23 years with Thompson Machinery Corp.
He was a Baptist and a U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force Reserve and U.S. Army National Guard veteran.
In addition to his wife, he leaves one son: John T. (Kathleen) Baxter Jr. of Drummonds; two stepdaughters: Brenda (Mike) Allen of Paris and Cindy (Mark) Jacobson of Memphis; three grandchildren: Brandi Baxter, Kristen (Nick) Jones and Taylor McNevin; and three great-grandchildren: Zachary Baxter and Haden and Ethan Jones.
He also was preceded in death by two sisters: Louise Townsend and Betty Wilson.
