David, the son of Jesse L. Baker of The Dalles WA and Anne Hartnett of Vancouver WA, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on October 8 1968 in Portland OR. He arrived in Vietnam on December 29 1968 and was assigned with Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During a daytime sweep on July 31 of the Xuan Que village complex Que Son District Quang Nam Province a SFD (Secondary Firing Device) was triggered which resulted in the deaths of three men and wounding an additional eleven Marines. Evacuated to the 95th Evacuation Hospital in Da Nang Sgt Baker died of pseudomonas pneumonia as a result of the wounds sustained by the hostile explosive device.

"Sgt. David Baker Funeral services will be held at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, for Sgt. David Baker, 19. Marine Corps sergeant who died in Vietnam. Arrangements are to be announced by Vancouver Funeral Chapel. Baker was born in Vancouver 16 Mar 1951, attended Pleasant Valley Grade school and Ridgefield High School. He joined the Marines when he was 17. In addition to his mother, Mrs. Anna Hartnett, David is survived by his father, Jess Baker, The Dalles Or; brothers, Dan, in the Navy; four sisters, Mary Ann Baker, Linda Daffron, Barbara Fink Hartnett, and Brenda Fink Hartnett, all of Vancouver; and grandparents, Gertrude Jones and Ernest Baker, both of Vancouver."
