Conrad P Baker was born in Maar, Oberhessen, Darmstadt, Germany. He was a Stone Mason & Coverlet Weaver. He Enlisted as a Private on 11 March 1865 in Co. D, 88th Pa. Infantry; Mustered Out Company D, 88th Infantry Regiment Pa on 30 Jun 1865 at Washington, DC. The 88th Pa was organized 1 Sep 1861 for a period of 3 years. Co. D was recruited at Philadelphia. Conrad was drafted almost at the end of the war and would have seen the last two battles: 31 Mar 1865 at Hatcher's Run, VA and 1 Apr 1865 at Five Forks, VA.
He applied for Invalid Pension June 1883. He was wounded in right arm between the shoulder and elbow about mid-way, a flesh wound. "The wound healed up but the shock and excitement caused when receiving the wound - which came from a Rebel Sharp Shooter - no doubt caused palpitation of the heart from which I have never yet recovered and never will. Other disability caused by my exposure is Rheumatism."
