Major J. M. Cunningham of Poetry committed suicide by taking Rough on Rats (rodent poison). He had attempted suicide one day last week. He died at age 76 and is the father of a large family, Mr. J.D. Cunningham and Mrs. Emma Smith of Kaufman and Mrs. R.W. Michis of Poetry were among them. He was buried in Terrell Monday. (August 19, 1822 - February 13, 1898, Masonic, per Kaufman County Cemetery Inscriptions, Vol. II for Oakland Memorial Prk Cemetery). Joseph was a Major in the Civil War and was always called Major after that.
