August 8. 2011—The Solidarity Center regrets to announce the accidental death of Jason Campbell, the organization's country program director in Nigeria, who died Friday in Abuja, Nigeria. He was 35.
"We are reeling from this devastating and premature loss. Jason was a well-respected and admired colleague with a deep commitment to social justice. His support for working people in Africa and the United States, especially those least empowered, is his significant legacy," said Nancy Mills, Solidarity Center interim executive director. "We grieve his death and send heartfelt condolences to his family."
Jason ran the Solidarity Center's West Africa programs in Nigeria and Liberia for two years, helping local unions organize new members and improve health and safety programs. Prior to joining the Solidarity Center, he spent about five years in the U.S. labor movement, working for the AFL-CIO, the Service Employees International Union, the National Union of Healthcare Workers, and the National Association of Letter Carriers as international trade research fellow, staff director, and regional field director, respectively. His career also included stints in Minnesota politics and with the federal government in Washington, DC. Campbell also served two years in Ukraine as a Peace Corps volunteer.
The funeral service will be held in Minnesota. Arrangements are being made for a celebration of Jason's life is planned to be held later in Washington, DC.
