Opal M. Halverson, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 at Fairview Southdale Hospital, Edina, Minn.
She was born June 1, 1922, in Lancaster, Minn. to Axel and Blenda (Christopherson) Bylund.
Opal was married to Dale Halverson June 18, 1945 in San Jose, Calif. Following their marriage, they resided in Thief River Falls, Mountain Iron and Babbitt, Minn. They were married for 46 years, until Dale's death at age 69.
She lived in Babbitt for 50 years before relocating to St. Therese's, The Terrace in Hopkins, Minn., at age 82, in order to live closer to her family.
Opal was blessed with a strong christian faith and committment to her family and spouse. She valued each one of her seven children, and through her love and nurturing, she believed they were her greatest work and gift to the world. Opal maintained ownership of the Halverson family farm located in Lancaster, which was homesteaded in 1882 and still owned by the family today.
She is survived by seven children and 14 grandchildren. Three daughters: Sharyn (Larry) Salmen, Ft. Collins, Colo.; Susan (Rick) Savolainen, Stillwater, Minn. and Debra (Jim) Blanner, Edina, Minn. Four sons: Major General David (Karen) Halverson, Fort Meyers, Va.; Todd (Annie) Halverson, Grand Forks, N.D.; Duane (Alison) Halverson, Plymouth, Minn.; and Kent Halverson, Chaska, Minn. Grandsons: Christopher (Cheryl) Salmen, San Diego, Calif.; Adam Salmen, Fort Collins, Colo; Ryan Savolainen, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mathew and Luke Halverson, Plymouth, Minn. Granddaughters: Megan Savolainen, San Francisco, Calif.; Jessica Blanner, Edina, Minn.; Anna, Ellen, and Lindsey (Tyler) Clinton, Stillwater, Minn.; Courtney and Chloe, Plymouth, Minn.; Cali and Dani Halverson, Grand Forks, N.D. One Sister, Janice (Jon) Bloom, St. Louis Park, Minn. Four sisters-in-law, Marilyn (David) Wilson, Baltimore, Md., Bev Halverson, Crystal, Minn.; Eleanore Halverson, Anoka, Minn., Marlys Bylund, Eagan, Minn., and one brother-in-law John (Yvonne) Halverson, Nisswa, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Roy and sister Betty Bryers, brothers-in-law Merle, Bob, and Harvey Halverson.
Funeral services were held at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Babbitt, Sept. 12. Pastor Charles Barnes officiated.
Interment was at River View Memorial Garden, Lancaster, Sept. 13.
Arrangements were made by Landmark Funeral Home, Virginia, Minn.
