Kris Kringle entered the US Navy on November 1, 1967, during the Vietnam War. During his military service, he achieved the grade of E3, and was discharged on October 17, 1969.
"Kris Kringle, formerly known as George Nobis, passed away March 10, 2003.
Mr. Kringle was well known throughout the area for his visits to veterans and children's hospitals, brightening the days of thousands of people in the Norfolk area with his portrayal of Santa Claus. Kris was the founder of Kringle Inc., a charity devoted to helping the needy and providing toys for children. He was a Vietnam veteran having served in the Navy, a member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the Fleet Reserve, Post 60.
The son of the late Olive and Herman Nobis, he is survived by his sisters, Margaret Gasink and Pauline Dunn and his brother, Carl Nobis, as well as four nephews, a niece and many great-nieces and -nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the David Adams Memorial Chapel, Gate 2, Norfolk Naval Station, Norfolk. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Toys for Tots, c/o MAG42 DET B 1430 C V TOW WAY, Naval Station, Norfolk, VA 23511-2524."
