Son of Edward Victor Atwell, Sr. who resided at 1900 Delaware Avenue, Wilmington, Delaware during the war.

Edward served as a 1st Lieutenant and Pilot on a B-25D-1 named "Torrid Tessie The Terror", 673rd Bombardment Squadron, 417th Bombardment Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Cecil County, Maryland prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on on November 27, 1941, prior to the war, at Camp Lee, Virginia. He was noted as being Single, without dependents.

His final flight took off from Nadzab Airfield at 1425 hours on an administrative flight to Saidor Airfield. His plane crashed between Erap River and Sorop River, north-northwest of Mount Sayapomia at roughly 9,500' elevation in the Saruwaged Range for any unknown cause.

Edward was later declared "Killed In Action" along with the entire crew and passengers during the war.
