Charles served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Lewis County, New York prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on January 3, 1942 in Utica, New York and was noted as Single, without dependents.

He died in the "Line Of Duty" during the war of a "Non Battle" related incident.

The Lowville Journal and Republican - November 11, 1943

A public memorial Requiem Mass was celebrated at 9:30 am Thursday in St. Martin's Church, by the Rev. Frederick P. Diviney. Members of the Holy Name Society and members of the American Legion carrying their colors and guard attended in a body.

The service was in memory of the first Port Leyden man killed in service, Pfc. Charles William Sampson. He was the son of Edward and Elizabeth Sampson.

He entered Army Air Force, January 6, 1941, and in March 1943 he sailed for Australia. He was killed at New Guinea Base, June 14, 1943 in an airplane crash, after he had been awarded his wings. His survivors are his parents, a sister Catherine and a brother, Clifford all of this village.
