Helen Mae Koethe Ackman
Birth: Aug. 1, 1926
Paris
Washington County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Aug. 17, 1966
Titusville
Brevard County
Florida, USA

Mom was the daughter of Richard Darrell KOETHE, I, and Edna Margaretta STRAIN, both of western Pennsylvania families. The name KOETHE is of German origin.

Donald Ackman and Helen Mae Koethe Ackman are my adopted parents. Donald sold the house in Titusville, Brevard County, FL in 1988 and moved to first the town of Ruth, then to the Washburn community near Bostic, Rutherford County, NC, with his 3rd wife, Myra Cook Morgan Ricketts Ackman (died 18 Jan 2004). It was the third marriage for both of them.

I remember Mom as a gentle, quiet, Christian lady. She grew up in rural Washington County, Pennsylvania. She graduated with her High School class on May 21, 1944 from Union High School. According to the program guide that she saved from her graduation, it went thusly:

BACCALAUREATE SERVICE

Processional: Pomp and Circumstance -- Elgar
Invocation: Reverend William H. Flurkey
Selection: "American Prayer"-Stock and Rose by the Girl's Chorus
Scripture Lession: Psalm 86 given by Reverend L. M. Van Inwegan
Prayer: Reverend W. J. McCashin
Selection: "Navy Hymn" - Dykes, Whiting and Hamilton sung by the Ensemble
Address: "The World God Would Have Us Build" by Joseph S. Morledge, D.D., Pastor of Sixth Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Selection: "A Song Of Peach" by Sibelius sung by the Girl's Chorus
Benediction: Reverend Jacob C. Ruble

Mom married my father Donald Willard "Don" ACKMAN on 22 May 1948 in Crafton, Allegheny Co, PA. I found their marriage license on-line at FamilySearch.Org in August 2012. What a joy that was to see her handwriting again!

Mom loved animals, especially dogs. Unfortunately, I have very few memories of her. But the one I do have is of her stopping our old faded green Volkswagon "bug" to help a wounded dog in the street just outside Parkway Junior High in Titusville. I do believe she was in frail health by then. But even with that infirmaty and also with their tiny bank account, she had offered to take the animal to a veterarian. It was too late though for the poor little dog. I remember how sad she felt all the way home. She was so thoughtful and kind. Another vivid memory I have is of when I was very little. I was feeling car sick in the back seat and Mom just stopped at a strangers house and knocked on the front door asking for a class of water for me. She was so sweet about it too. Isn't it funny that even when other memories fade, the tender memories that one can recall after so many years?! She was really special.

Inspite of her increasing physical difficulties, Mom was very strongwilled. There was nothing weak about her mind. Her wrists were very tiny and delicate. Mom apparently loved Jesus Christ and to read The Holy Bible. I have found many passages underlined with notes from her studies. I know she would be so happy to know that her little girl now Believes. :o) Mom also had a large collection of costume jewelry I "inherited" after her death in 1966. Dad gave away most of my inheritance to a charity. He was a hateful, cruel, unprincipaled, vile man. But God is truly merciful, and I am grateful for the few years of peace that I did have and the gentle memories of a loving, caring Mother. I do thank God for His tender mercies.

*** Dedicated To My Mother ***

If tears could build a stairway
and memories a lane,
We'd walk right up to heaven
and bring you home again.
No farewell words were spoken.
No time to say good-bye.
You were gone before we knew it,
And only God knows why.
Our hearts still ache in sadness
and secret tears still flow.
What it meant to lose you,
NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW.

---

When tomorrow starts without me, and I'm not there to see. If the sun should rise and find your eyes all filled with tears for me, I wish so much you wouldn't cry the way you did today, while thinking of the many things we didn't get to say. I know how much you love me as much as I love you, and each time that you think of me. I know you'll miss me too.

---

Your Mother is always with you. She's the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street, she's the smell of certain foods you remember, flowers you pick, the fragrance of life itself. She's the cool hand on your brow when you're not feeling well, she's your breath in the air on a cold winter's day. She is the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep, the colors of a rainbow, she is Christmas morning. Your mother lives inside your laughter. She's the place you came from, your first home, and she's the map you follow with every step you take. She's your first love, your first friend, even your first enemy, but nothing on earth can separate you. Not time, not space not even death. [added by Precious Memories]

I miss you so much Mom.

Your Loving Daughter
