'Donnie" was born November 30, 1949 in West Palm Beach (Greenacres), Florida, to Donald W. Atwell Sr. and Gloria J. Sellers. He grew up on Lucille Avenue in Fort Myers, Florida, in a loving family with three brothers and one sister. He attended Lee Junior High School, and prior to joining the Army, worked for three years as painter for, Ron Ault Painting. Ron states he was a fine young man, quiet and unassuming. He loved fixing up and racing automobiles.

He went to Vietnam, on November 16, 1969, and gave his life for our Country on December 27, 1969, in Bing Duong, South Vietnam. He served with B Co, 1st BN, 18th INF RGT, 1 INF DIV.

His awards included Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, National Defense, Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign Medals, and Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation.
