James H. Carlile was born in South Carolina and moved to Georgia with his father when he was around 6 years old. In 1862 he enlisted in the Phillips Georgia Legion Infantry Battalion, Confederate States of America. He was shot through the left leg in the Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg, Maryland). He survived the war (kept his leg) and died in Cobb County in 1891.
