Charles E. Brent served as an Airman 1st Class in the United States Air Force.

He served during the Korean War.

He was originally from Merrifield, Virginia.

He is also the older brother of SP 4 Larry Thomas Brent, United States Army, who was killed in Vietnam. Larry Brent is interred in Section 7 of the Gettysburg National Cemetery.


Charles E. Brent, 37, was found dead Thursday afternoon at his home on Gettysburg R. 3.

Dr. C. G. Crist, county coroner, said the death had occurred in the basement of his home and had been caused by the firing of a 30-40 Craig rifle shot through the heart. Dr. Crist and state police, who investigated, said the death was a suicide.

A native of Merryfield, Va., he was a son of Mrs. Susan Moore Brent, Gettysburg R. 3, and the late Logan Brent. A carpenter, a member of the York-Adams Carpenter's Union, he had worked on many major constructions in this area, including the Holiday Inn. He was a veteran of World War II.

He was a member of the Gettysburg Bible Church, the Gettysburg VFW, and the Hunterstown Raritan Club.

Surviving are his mother; his wife, the former Mary Alice Thompson, and these children: Charles E. Brent, Jr., Daniel A. Brent, Lori J. Brent, Lisa M. Brent, all at home, and these sisters and brothers: Logan M. Brent, York; Cassius Brent, Gettysburg R. 3; William Brent, Fairfield R. 1; Mrs. Ruth Hobson, Jersey City, N.J.; Mrs. Virginia Herrick, Seven Stars; Chester Brent, Dillsburg R. 1; Mrs. Betty Mascenick, Roselle, N.J.; Spencer Brent, Atlanta, Ga.; Stephen Brent, Gettysburg R. 3; Mrs. Mary Wolf, Littlestown R. 2; Mrs. Sylvia Elliott, Gettysburg R. 3; Joseph Brent, Harrisburg; Larry Brent, Gettysburg R. 3; Miss Dorothy Brent, Gettysburg R. 3; and 36 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Bender Funeral Home, Carlisle Street, with his pastor, the Rev. Charles E. Leiphart, officiating. Interment in the Gettysburg National Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday evening at the funeral home.
