"For a half century, Hazel Heckman has watched from her front window as the Anderson Island ferry approached and departed Yoman Dock.
The MV Christine Anderson -- a Pierce County-run ferry connecting the island to Steilacoom -- has just enough inconveniences to safeguard this friendly, forested sanctuary: $9.50 round trips for a car and driver, and a 6 p.m. final run Monday through Thursday.
The more convenient the ferry, says Heckman, the more prone the island is to growth and change.
"Small is better," says the 94-year-old Kansas native, echoing a slogan sported by islanders on bumper stickers.
In 1967, Heckman wrote a witty, gentle memoir of her adopted home called "Island in the Sound." She's still eager to share the island's serenity and quirkiness, but believes newcomers should respect the bucolic lifestyle and sense of community that attracted them in the first place."
