Herman served as a Steward's Mate, Second Class, U.S.S. Cony (DD-508), U.S. Navy during World War II.
He resided in the District of Columbia prior to the war.
He was "Killed In Action" when the Cony and the Philip (DD-498) were attacked by about 25 enemy bombers near the Treasury Islands during the war. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
