Birth: Apr. 28, 1923
Death: Dec. 19, 1943
Lincoln County
Idaho, USA

Sergeant Schindel was a crew member aboard
U.S. Army Air Corps B-24E Liberator #42-7074,
serving with the 464th Bomber Group, 770th
Bomber Squadron from Pocatello Army Air Base.

While on a routine training flight, the four
motored bomber experienced engine failures
due likely to carburetor freezings at about
10,000 feet elevation. For nearly 45 minutes
the pilots attempted to restart the engines.
Gradually losing altitude, and with only one
motor functioning, the pilot attempted a
crash landing, 20 miles east and three miles
north of Shoshone, Idaho.

At approximately 500 feet, two crew members
parachuted out, and a third man attempted a
bailout at 250 elevation. Of these three men,
two died the next day of injuries and the
third survived with injuries.

The bomber struck a boulder field of lava
rock, which shredded the airplane, and before
coming to a stop, tumbled over a 15-foot
ledge and fell into a ravine, bursting into
flames. The six remaining fliers aboard all
died instantly.

The crash was witnessed by two sheep
ranchers in the area.

Sergeant Schindel was a resident of Hagerstown Maryland.

The crew killed:

2nd Lt. Robert C Gitt (pilot)
2nd Lt. Harold B Hood
2nd Lt. Walter C Ives
2nd Lt. Henry D Smith
