Byron served as a Radioman, Third Class, USS Shark (SS-314), U.S. Navy during World War II.
He resided in the District of Columbia prior to the war.
He was declared "Missing In Action" when the Shark was sunk by Japanese destroyer Harukaze off Taiwan during the war. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
