Roland served as a Electrician's Mate, First Class, U.S.S. Shark (SS-174), U.S. Navy during World War II.
He resided in Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland prior to the war.
He was declared "Missing In Action" when the Shark was believed to be sunk by Japanese destroyer Yamakaze east of Manado during the war. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
