William Henry Kleppinger was known as "Hank" by his classmates at Newport Harbor High in Newport Beach, California. While a student there, he was a very active member of the Science Club and the Science Explorer's Post. Hank had an interest in creative writing, so he served on the staff of "Flotsam and Jetsam", Harbor's annual literary magazine.
After graduating from NHHS in 1962, he went on to college, and then in 1985, he married a former NHHS classmate, who was the mother of a young child. He soon adopted his wife's daughter and easily "filled the shoes of dad" in a very special way. Although Hank's marriage did not survive, his close relationship with his daughter and her mother, endured.
Hank was an avid sailor and very involved in associated activities including serving as Commodore of the South Shore Yacht Club in Newport Beach, as Rear Commodore of the Newport Ocean Sailing Association, and as Vice Chair of numerous races, regattas, and charitable events.
Hank died after a sudden three week illness, leaving behind to mourn his loss, his devoted daughter, beloved grandson, special ex-wife, other loving family, and many dear friends. He was laid to rest next to his brother, mother, father, and grandparents.
Perhaps the best description of Hank is in the words of a very close, long time friend....
"Hank was one of the people that people shake their heads about, some because they don't understand him, some don't believe he's real, some because they think he's funny and even more because his HEART was so big!"
Although Hank may have "left the building", he is just around the corner and all is well.
