Pvt. Bicknell, a native of Abington, MA, joined C company, 38th Massachusetts Infantry which was organized and mustered on August 26-28, 1862. few days later they moved to Baltimore, Maryland and joined the defenses of Maryland. They left Baltimore September 8, 1862. They headed to Powhattan Dam after, and stayed there until October 12. After that they rode the Baltic steamboat for Ship Island, Mississippi on November 10th and arrived there December 14 and then then moved to New Orleans and stayed there until February 11, 1863. On March 6th they moved to Baton Rouge. In early February, Pvt Bicknell was admitted to the Marine Hospital in New Orleans, with a case of "Chronic Diarrhea." He died of his illness on April 14, 1863. There is no record of his burial place.
