Motor racing driver and winner of the 1946 Indianapolis 500 Race. Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. In 1917 George and his family moved to Ontario, Canada when he was a small boy. In 1924 they moved again to Los Angeles, California. When he reached adulthood, he became an American citizen. He and his younger brother Hal both raced on 'outlaw' circuits in California but by 1939 he'd moved to bigger cars and tried but failed to qualify for the 1939 Indy 500. He returned in 1940 and 1941, qualified but retired with problems in each. Racing came to a halt for the remainder of the war years. In 1946 he won the prestigious Indianapolis 500 Race but a few months later at the Lakewood Speedway, Atlanta, Georgia, he was involved in a four car pile up on the 98th lap of the 100 lap race, when he and fellow racer George Barringer collided and lost their lives. At the time of his death he lived in Fulton CA. Buried in Sunnyside Mausoleum.
