Arnette & Steele Funeral Home Chapel Officiants: Michael Woodruff & Roger Cox Interment: Hickory Flat Cemetery Dorton Branch, KY Married to Chester Howard, Sr. (b: December 26, 1917 in Asher Ky Age at death: 42 Burial: Ann Arbor, Michigan) Howard, Ethel Coots -passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at her home following a fierce struggle with breast cancer. She was born March 20, 1922, during a blinding, two-foot snowstorm in Dorton Branch, Ky., to the late Andrew and Ollie Williams Coots. Although she was named Bernice at birth, this changed two days later when a family friend named Ethel visited and had the audacity to inform the parents the newborn should have her name instead. They agreed, much to the baby's chagrin. As a child, her best friend was her imagination, she recently recalled. Ethel became a natural storyteller, a gift reflected in the countless stories, poems and journal entries she wrote throughout her life. This collection is now a treasured legacy left behind for her family. There was nothing her children –lovingly nicknamed her "five little peppers" after a book she often read them –and later, her grandchildren, loved more than to hear her tell one of those stories. It was this love of words, a profound faith in God, and a deep devotion to her children that sustained her throughout the difficult times in her life. In order to provide for her family, Ethel often had to walk miles to work. On a day she later described as "the darkest day of my life," she was even forced to leave them temporarily to seek work in Cincinnati. Her later years were more joyful, filled with church activities, quilting, gardening, reading, writing and genealogical research. Although she lived for a time in Moscow, Ohio, her beloved Cumberland Mountains called her home, and she spent the last 14 years of her life in Middlesboro. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, former husband, Chester Howard, Sr., and brother, Arnold Coots. She is survived by her "five little peppers" and their spouses, Tyrone(now deceased)and Jacqueline Howard of Cincinnati, Ohio, Jeanette and Kenneth Rutherford of Middlesboro, Chessie Howard of Missoula, Mont., Arnold and Susan Howard of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Chester and Kathy Howard of Dorton Branch; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; six siblings and their spouses, Denver Coots(now deceased) of New Richmond, Ohio, Elbert and Roberta Coots(both now deceased) of Morning View, Ky., Margie Partin of New Tazewell, Tenn., Helen and Wesley Roark of Moscow, Ohio, Mary Ruth(now deceased) and Clifford Taylor of Dorton Branch, and Richard and Shirley Coots of Verona, Ky and a host of beloved nieces, nephews and friends. Her "going away" party was held Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Arnett & Steele Funeral Home in Pineville with Michael Woodruff and Roger Cox presiding.
