Native son, Wayne H. Bubar, 89, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011. Wayne had suffered with Alzheimer's for many years, and had finally succumbed to complications of this terrible disease, yet was still singing up until the day he died. Wayne was born to Frances I. (Patton) Bubar and Frederick Bubar in June 1921 at Santa Barbara's Cottage Hospital. His parents were married January 30, 1912. For a wedding present, his grandfather had a home built for his parents in San Luis Obispo, where the family resided until Fran passed in 1979. Wayne graduated from San Luis Obispo High School, and then on to what now is Cuesta College. He was asked to play for a pro-basketball team, the "House of David." However, to belong you had to grow a beard. Wayne called himself a California hairless, so it didn't pan out. Wayne became a member of Patton's 3rd Army during World War II, having served in the signal corps. Wayne met his future wife, Billie Jones, from Paso Robles in 1935 at a dance in Atascadero. After his return from the War, they were married in 1946. They had gone to the "Rose Garden" in Pismo Beach, a favorite dance spot in those days, and decided to elope to Reno, Nev. Later, they were married at the Old Mission San Luis Obispo. Wayne had a basketball game that night and got married in his uniform, never to live that down. Wayne and Billie raised two children, Debra and Gary. Wayne was a very good father. He took interest in all the kid's activities - he'd drive to swim meets every weekend, take Debra to the beach at the crack of dawn to surf and let her stay until the beach opened up in the evening so she could surf the pier. That was love! On moon lit summer evenings, he'd gather the neighborhood kids together to take them to the old cemetery to tell ghost stories, and he'd take his granddaughters to the lake to feed the ducks before school - that's the kind of dad he was. After the War, Wayne started his career with Bank of America, then Security Pacific Bank. He was the very first branch manager of the Security Pacific Bank at Vandenberg Air Force Base. He was also branch manager in San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay and Arroyo Grande and retired in 1979 as Vice President. Wayne loved to sing, shoot dice, go to the horse races, the casinos and his "martini" in the evening. He belonged to the Elks, Eagles, Exchange Club and Mustang boosters. He was also a "vallejo" with the Caballeros de San Luis Obispo. Wayne is survived by his daughter, Debra Hubert of Atascadero; son, Gary Bubar (Chom) of Vacaville, Calif.; granddaughters Sarah Hubert of Brooklyn, N.Y., Rachael Hubert of San Francisco, Calif., and Kimberlee Bubar of Los Angeles; and grandson, Brian (Shannon) Bubar of Vacaville. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren Kaylee, Kendyle, Joseph and Isabella. He was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Bubar; father, Fred Bubar; mother, Frances; step-father Frank Barcellos; brothers Loren and Dean; and Dean's wife, Audrey. He will be placed to rest at the San Luis Cemetery. As per Wayne's wishes, there will be no services. Wayne was a cancer survivor, so in lieu of flowers, please donate to a cancer or Alzheimer's foundation of your choice.
