Tara was found dead at the front door of her home, where she was trying to escape her husband. He shot her to death in front of her five year old son & six year old daughter as she was trying to take them and leave to move out of the domestic violence situation. Her husband then shot & killed himself. The children were not physically harmed and were found standing at the door by their mother. Her oldest son was not at home.
When she was killed, one of her classmates called me. I was stunned... I called the Directors of Nursing and Education immediately so we could make plans for the other students and Tara's family. I still think of her and wish she had told us she was being battered. Would she still be alive today? We will never know.
Tara was my student at ECPI College of Technology, where she was studying to become a nurse. The school held a memorial service, and her classmates and instructors attended her funeral. The school also planted a weeping willow tree in front of the facility in her name. I was chosen to present Tara's nursing pin to her father at what would have been her pinning ceremony at graduation.
Rest in peace, Tara. No one can hurt you now.
