Elmer S. Smith was an educator, humanitarian and attorney. He is best remembered for leading a tireless crusade representing eight members of the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World, also know as the "Wobblies")convicted and imprisioned after the Centralia Massacre on November 11, 1919. Nathan Wesley Everest was a IWW member who was lynched that night by unknown local citizens.Smith died on March 20, 1932 at 3:00 AM as a result of bleeding related to stomach ulcers and possibly cancer. He left a widow, young children and many friends. He was a member of the local Presbyterian Church. He married Laura Magill on February 16, 1918.They moved to a small rented house on Walnut Street in Centralia,the current location of Centralia College's Washington Hall. He also has been honored by a plaque on the Centralia College Clock/Bell Tower.
