Death: Jan. 30, 1995

"My soul empty as the silence, empty with a vague aching emptiness desiring, needing someone, something..."
We pause today to shed a tear in memory of Richard McKinney. A man who will be remembered as a father, grandfather, nephew,"cuz," good friend and a pretty decent golfer.

Richard was born in Dallas, Texas. He and his brother, who preceded him in death, received their early education in Dallas, Texas. The family eventually moved to "54th., St.," in Oakland to live with his beloved Aunt. The family attended Saint Columbus Catholic Church of Oakland. Richard and his brother Howard later joined the church family.

During his middle school years at Oakland Technical high school, it was revealed that Richard possessed an athletic prowess that would enable him to excel in two sports simultaneously (football & track/field). He had received numerous college scholarship offers, based on his academic and athletic abilities, but chose the military as the first step on his career ladder. Richard entered the United States Marine Corps (USMC)in 1954. He was sent to Camp Pendleton in San Diego for boot camp. Once again his athletic abilities were recognized and he was selected to join the USMC track and field team. Under special orders, the team was sent to Quanitico, VA to train and compete in track and field elimination trials. The eventual goal being a possible selection onto the up coming United States Olympic track and field team of 1960. Richard did not make it to the "finals," but he did receive two medals-one gold & one silver, for his participation in the USMC track and field games. Prior to his military discharge, he married long time girlfriend, Emelda. After his honorable discharge from the USMC, he enrolled at Oakland City College(*formerly-Grove street College). He continued to display phenomenon athletic abilities in both football and track/field. However, Richard opted to forego further athletic pursuits, deciding to concentrate on his family.

He worked at the US Post Office for a number of years. After leaving the US Post Office, he eventually went to work at the Naval Air Station in Alameda. He had also obtained an advanced degree from San Francisco State University in Public Administration. He had also met and married Margaret. Their marriage was short-lived, producing one child.

After many years of employment with the Naval base of Alameda, he opted for an early retirement. He was then able to spend 'quality' time pursuing another athletic passion, golf! He had also met and married Carolyn Fields. She had preceded him in death.

"We have tomorrow bright before us like a flame..."

When I come to the end of the road.
And the sun has set for me.
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room
Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little but not too long
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that we once shared
Miss me, but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take.
And each must go alone
It's all a part of the Master's plan
A step on the road to home.

If when you are lonely and sick of heart.
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrow in doing good deeds.

Miss me - but let me go.
