Nancy Lee Bertrand was born on June 9, 1930 in Butte, Montana to Benjamin Charles and Florence Leah McWilliams Gordon. She married Donald L. Bertrand on June 12, 1954. They were the parents of Robert, Daniel, Gordon and Blake. The family moved from Butte to Des Moines, Washington to raise their boys in 1968. She died on March 16th, 2013 at the age of 82.
I interviewed Nancy in 1990 about her family history. She grew up in Butte of an Irish mother and a Jewish father. Her ancestors on her father's side were Russian Jews. Her grandfather, Michael Gordon boarded a train to leave Russia during the anti-Jewish pogroms. She heard that 90% of the people in his town were killed.
He came to America and settled in Salt Lake City. There he met Mr. Perelson and they became partners in the scrap metal and junk business.
From Salt Lake they came to Butte around the 1890's. At that time Butte was thriving and they started up a business. Mr. Perelson and Mike Gordon eventually split their partnership.
Michael Gordon owned a beautiful apartment in the 1930's in Butte. Apparently the family became involved in a plumbing business at 631 East Aluminum.
Esther Fisher Gordon, her aunt married a first cousin. Another aunt, Sarah Gordon married a German Gentile.
Nancy's father, Ben Gordon, worked for Paramount Pictures. He had a business degree. With the stockmarket crash in 1929, he make about $.50 a day.
Nancy felt she was never accepted by her peers - Catholic or Jewish. She felt rejected for being 1/2 Irish and was out of place both at Temple and mass.
