Benjamin Stringfield Brittain was born about 1793 in Buncombe county, North Carolina to James Brittain, Sr. and Delilah Stringfield. He married Celia Vance on 20 May 1817. She was the daughter of Col. David Vance and his wife, Priscilla Brank of Buncombe County.

Benjamin Stringfield and Celia (Vance) Brittain were the parents of Ann Catherine, Priscilla A., Benjamin Franklin, Marcus Lafayette, Celia D., Julius Wilson, Weldon E., and William Thomas.

Benjamin S. Brittain was sheriff of Buncombe County from 1817-1822. He removed his family to Haywood County in 1823 and purchased some land on Pigeon River from his brother-in-law - Ellis Edwards.

Mr. Brittain served in the House of Commons from 1827-1829, and the Senate from 1832-1835. He also served in the Mexican-American War with the title of General. He died 19 August 1864 in Cherokee County, North Carolina.
