He was a major in the Revolutionary
War from Rhode Island (company and regiment unknown). He married Esther Nichols who died 9 Jan 1832 at 74 years. children:

Major William Gardner, who was an officer in the Revolutionary war, removed from Rhode Island to Pinckney, N.Y. in 1808, where he resided until his death.
Job, son of William, was born in 1800, and in 1822 married Laura Chase, of Elbridge, Onondaga county and subsequently located in Lewis County, whence he removed, in 1832, to Rodman, locating upon the farm now owned by his son Giles W. He had born to him eight children, six of whom are living, namely: Sarah (Mrs. Anthony Scidmore), Mary J. (Mrs. J.D. Adams), Maranda (Mrs. Milo Wait), of Tylerville, Esther (Mrs. A. Wait), of Pinckney, Cornelia M. (Mrs. George Bibbins), and Giles W.

According to The Gardiners of Narragansett : being a genealogy of the descendants of George Gardiner the colonist, 1638 (page 47), William is the son of John and Ruth Gardiner and was born 9 Feb 1756 and married Hester/Esther Nichols 27 Feb 1780. According to the same page, his father John was born 15 Dec 1717 in East Greenwich, RI and married Ruth in 1740. Rhode Island, Vital Extracts, 1636-1899 for William Gardner Vol. 01: Kent County: Births, Marriages, Deaths page (118) supports that birth date 9 Feb 1756 as well.
