Bernard served as a Tech. Sergeant, Company G, 334th Infantry, 84th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Lewis County, New York prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on August 26, 1939. He was noted as a Widower without dependents.

He was "Killed In Action" in Belgium during the war and was awarded a Purple Heart.

Lowville Journal and Republican - March 15, 1945

Mrs. Karl D. Benedict, Turin, received word Tuesday that her son, Sgt. Bernard Reed, 35, was killed in action in Belgium on March 1. He was in the infantry.

Sergeant Reed enlisted in the army in July 1930, and was stationed at Fort Ontario, Oswego, and at West Point until 1943. He was sent to Camp Claiborne, La., and went overseas in September 1944.

He was born in Turin April 9, 1909, son of Mrs. Karl D. (Myrtle Sabin) Benedict and the late Willard Reed. He was engaged in farming at the time of his enlistment.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred, and two daughters, Bernice and Cynthia, Fulton, his mother, step father, three sisters, three brothers, and a half-sister.
