Alan Jay Lerner
Birth: Aug. 31, 1918
Death: Jun. 14, 1986

Playwright, Lyricist. He was one of the top songwriters in the musical theatre and Hollywood during the Golden Age of the American musical. Lerner was born the son of the owner of the Lerner Shops clothing stores. After graduating from Harvard, he began his career as a radio scriptwriter before teaming up with Frederick Loewe to produce the lyrics for such Broadway hits as "Brigadoon," "An American in Paris," "My Fair Lady," "Gigi," and "Camelot." Lerner won two Oscars for his screenplays of "An American In Paris" (1951) and "Gigi" (1958). He also won a Grammy for "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever." After Loewe suffered a heart attack, learner and he parted ways in 1962. Lerner also wrote the lyrics for musicals with Leonard Bernstein, Andre Previn, and Burton Lane, among others, although he never again achieved the fame he had with Loewe. (bio by: Brenda)
