Richard peacefully passed away at home in Richmond, Ca., on Sunday, July 11, 2010. Richard graduated from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Il., with a B.S. and a M.A. Degrees in Social Science. He began his teaching career in Rockford Il., then to Tucson, Az., and finally arriving in California. He taught in San Gabriel, Ca. and then
McLane High School
in Fresno . In 1970, he began teaching at Fresno City College and retired from his position as Political Science instructor in 1998. He loved politics and
was involved in many Democratic campaigns locally and nationally.

He relished getting into arguments/debates about government. He enjoyed skiing at Sierra Summit and also in Europe, racquetball with colleagues, especially Jerry Farrington, traveling with family, listening to jazz music, and spending time in Half Moon Bay. During his retirement, he enjoyed boating in the Bay area. Needing to supplement his teaching income after the birth of his daughter, Richard joined the sales force of Blue Haven Pools. Later, he became the owner of Sunkist Pools Fresno,n and built hundreds of pools in the San Joaquin Valley. Having a good secretary and efficient sales staff, he was able to continue teaching in the off-season and became fully involved during the summer.

Teaching was his love and never would consider quitting. Richard is survived by his partner, Mary Van Duyne; his son, Brad Bartels of Atascadero; his daughter, Lisa Bartels of Fresno ; and a sister, Colette Petr, of Texas; his former wife, "Sam" Yelinek of Clovis; son-in-law, Frank Rabusin and his wife Marilyn of Fresno . He is also survived by granddaughters, Kirstin Rabusin, Katrina Rabusin, Miranda Bartels and Samantha Bartels.

A Memorial and Celebration of Richard's Life will be held at The Manhattan Restaurant at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 11, 2010. Remembrances in Richard's name may be made to Valley Animal Center; or any animal sanctuary organization.
