MEMORIAL SERVICES PLANNED FOR FRESNO PHILHARMONIC'S ROBERT "BOB' BERGSTROM
Memorial services are being planned for next week for Robert "Bob" Bergstrom, a longtime member of the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra and a Madera County music teacher, who was found dead Thursday near Bass Lake.
Mr. Bergstrom, who had been missing since May 14, was discovered in the camper shell of his pickup truck in a secluded area about three miles from Road 274 north of Bass Lake.
A couple saw Mr. Bergstrom's 1995 Nissan pickup and notified authorities, ending an extensive air and ground search in eastern Madera and northern Fresno counties.
Madera County Sheriff John Anderson said Mr. Bergstrom, 48, who had recently moved to Ahwahnee, committed suicide by self-asphyxiation.
Mr. Bergstrom's ex-wife, Megan Bergstrom, a Fresno school teacher, said the body will be cremated under the direction of the Chapel of the Light and that memorial services are planned for Tuesday at the Northwest Church in Fresno. The time for the services had not been set Friday.
Mr. Bergstrom was a principal trombonist in the Fresno Philharmonic. He played with the group for 30 years, starting at age 15.
A recording artist, he was well-known in local music circles and was a member of the California State University, Fresno, Alumni Band.
In 1996, he was featured as a soloist at Carnegie Hall in New York while performing with Fresno State's award-winning Wind Ensemble.
Mr. Bergstrom, a 1969 graduate of
McLane High School and a Fresno State alumnus, went to work for the Bass Lake Joint Union Elementary School District last August as an instrumental music teacher and taught at: Bass Lake Elementary, Oakhurst Elementary, Wasuma Elementary in Ahwahnee and Oak Creek Intermediate in Oakhurst.
