Nicholas enlisted as a Private in the Continental Line for Massachusetts on 1 December 1775. He served for one year in the Company commanded by Captain Samuel Bartlett in the Regiment commanded by Jonathan Ward. His Company was engaged in the battle at White Plains, New York. At the end of 1771, he was honorably discharged at Peekskill, New York after a year of service.

Nicholas re-enlisted in the Spring of 1777 in the Regiment commanded by Colonel Baldwin, serving in the Company commanded by Captain Eaton. Colonel Baldwin’s Regiment was one of the regiments in the Corps of Artificers. The Corps was comprised of individuals with specialized skills required to sustain an army on the move, e.g., carpenters, blacksmiths, saddlers, etc. Twenty-two year old Nicholas was a blacksmith by trade. He served in the Corps in support of operations at Ticonderoga and Stillwater. He was honorably discharged after 10 months service. His total war service was one year and ten months.

Nicholas Cottrell applied for, and received, a pension for his war service. A certificate of pension was issued 4 October 1819 and he was placed on the rolls to receive the standard allowance for non-officers of $8.00 per month.

Following the death of her husband in 1842, Lydia was granted a widow’s pension based upon her late husband’s service in the Revolutionary War. On 4 March 1843, her pension commenced at the rate of $56.66 per year
