Granddaddy was born in Birmingham, Alabama and he was named Jay after his Uncle Jay Dell Reed but in 1941 legally changed his name to James. During the Great Depression he was offered a job at a gas station in Memphis from a man (Mr. Johnson) passing through, so he moved to Memphis. He married Laura Grace Wilkerson on April 26, 1935 in Hernando, Mississippi. He retired from Firestone Tire in 1972 as a tool and die maker. He enjoyed CB radio's and had the call sign KQM7455 for years.
Tuesday morning, January 28, 1986:
JAMES T. REED, 74, retired die maker for Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., died yesterday at his home after a long illness. Services will be at 2 P.M. tomorrow at Forest Hill Funeral Home Midtown with burial in Forest Hill Cemetery Midtown. Mr. Reed was a member of Raleigh Baptist Church, the Frayser Masonic Lodge No. 746, the Scottish Rite and the Order of the Eastern Star. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Grace Reed; a daughter, Ms Laura Ison of Memphis; a brother Slaughter Reed of Birmingham, Ala., and five grandchildren, Brenda Ison, Dennis Ison, Beverly Ison, Shelley Reed, Jimmy Reed and two great grandchildren Geoff and Amy.
Granddaddy died at home peacefully in his sleep.
