Funeral Notice In The Elk County, Kansas I.O.O.F. Bulletin:
Sarah J. (Tullis) Burtch was born in Cornersville, Fayette County, Indiana, on November 7, 1858 — and departed this life March 15, 1943, at the age of 83 years, 4 months, and 8 days, in an I.O.O.F. Home (Independent Order of Oddfellows) near Manhattan, Kansas.
In 1869, when she was 11 years old, she came with her parents to Elk County, Kansas, residing in and around Howard most of her life.
On April 7, 1875, she was united in marriage to Worth G. Burtch. To this union was born 3 children, Norman E. Burtch of Chanute, Kansas; Mrs. J.A. (Gertrude) Rowe of Howard, Kansas; and Claudia Burtch, who passed away September 13, 1897 at the age of 12.
Sarah Burtch was one of those hardy pioneer women to whom fell more than her lot of hardship and responsibility. She rejoiced in it however, and no road was too long nor task too heavy when illness demanded her attention. Many an aching brow has been soothed by her gentle hand, and many homes have had occasion to pay their tribute for her kindly ministrations. She was loved and respected by all. She was long an active and enthusiastic member of the Rebekah Lodge and a member of the past Noble Grand Club of the I.O.O.F.
Her husband passed away on April 6, 1932, just the day before their 57th wedding anniversary. After her husband's death, she lived with her son and daughter until July 1938, when she decided to live in an Odd Fellows Home for which she had worked so enthusiastically in her more active years. Here she spent the remaining years of her life, happily.
She leaves to mourn her passing, her son, Norman E. Burtch, Chanute, KS, and her daughter, Mrs. J.A. (Gertrude) Rowe, Sedan, KS; two granddaughters, Mrs. Dan (Helen) Bower of Chanute, Kansas, and Mrs. Francis Cass of Howard, Kansas; one step-grandson, Mr. Donald Strope, Chanute,KS; four great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; making five generations in all of whom she was justly proud. She leaves also, one brother, Ell Tullis, of Abilene, Kansas, besides several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Sarah's funeral was held at the Moon Funeral Home, Wednesday, March 17, at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. B.L. Trail. Music was furnished by Mrs. Willard Morris and Mrs. John Garrison, accompanied by Mrs. C.A. Cass, Clayton McDonald, & Lester Barnaby. Interment was in Grace Lawn Cemetery at Howard, Kansas. Those in charge of the Howard Rebekah Lodge delivered the committal service at the grave.
