Birth: Jul. 18, 1840
Hampshire, England
Death: Mar. 16, 1922
Lafayette County
Missouri, USA

John Maynard was son of George Maynard and Charlotte BAILEY ws born in Portsmouth, Enlgand and died in Lexington, Missouri. He was married to Virginia ABBOTT on 25 January 1862 in Lexinton, Missouri.

When John was around the age of 4 He and his Mother and step father and a older brother, George, was in the United States and John and George were either Kidnapped or possibly sold to the Indians. Their mother and step father returned to England. When John was still quite young his brother George ran away from the Indains and promised John he would return to get him but John never seen George again. A mountain man and Indian woman raised John.

According to Pension records John joined the Union Army in Elwood Kansas when he was 20 years of age.

John thought he spelled his last name as Manard until his mother found him when his youngest son was about 13 years old. Then he found that it was actually spelled Maynard.

John traveled to England for awhile then he returned to Lexington to his wife and children. He wrote about his travels along the way.

John and Virgina ABBOTT Maynard had seven children, Arthur Maynard 1863-1886, Seymour Maynard 1866-1948, John Maynard 1870-1885, Louis Maynard 1873-1895, Matinza Maynard 1877-1948, Mary Jane Maynard 1880-1957, William Maynard 1883-1937 (again the last name may be spelled Manard in some accounts)

Note: This is the same John Maynard with a Civil War headstone in the this same cemetery, John Manard. All of his military records were under Manard, as were many other records. His correct spelling was Maynard. See memorial 96712975.
