Politician, African American Civil Rights Leader. He relocated from Mississippi to Las Vegas in 1942 to work at the Basic Magnesium Plant in Henderson, a company that was vital to the war effort during World War II. Finding that racial discrimination was as pervasive in Las Vegas as it was back in Mississippi, he organized a local chapter of the NAACP and served as its president. During his tenure in the 1950's and 1960's, he courageous led the community to major victories that desegregated some of the casinos and other businesses in town. In 1951, he founded the Westside Credit Union so that the African-American community would have access to loans that allowed them to start their own businesses. In 1967, he became the first elected black legislator in Nevada history, where he served in the Assembly until 1971.
