T. J. BARNES FOUND DEAD EARLY TUESDAY
Rites Will Be Thursday For First County Judge
Judge Thomas Jefferson Barnes, 76, pioneer McCurtain county resident, died in his sleep early Tuesday morning. He was found by his wife.
Judge and Mrs. Barnes had returned late Monday from driving their daughter, Mrs. Walter Hugh Drane, to Texarkana, where she boarded a plane for her home in Los Angeles, Calif.
He had been troubled with a heart ailment, but it was not considered serious, and his death was unexpected.
Born near Gillham, Ark., May 16, 1874, he moved to Indian Territory in January, 1902, settling at Goodwater where he practiced law for several months in the commissioners court. In the fall of 1902 when the commissioners court was moved to Garvin, Judge and Mrs. Barnes became the first two persons to live there. He practiced law there until 1907.
In November, 1907, he was elected McCurtain county's first county judge, taking office at statehood.
The Barnes family moved to Idabel and he was elected for a second term in 1910.
A member of the Methodist church and a thirty-second Mason, Judge Barnes retired from practice of law many years ago to look after his extensive properly holdings.
Funeral services, have been set for 2:30 p. m. Thursday at the First Methodist church. Rev. Willis H. Germany, pastor, will officiate, assisted by, Rev. R. R. Craig, pastor of the Presbyterian Church.
Arrangements and burial in Denison cemetery are under direction of Wilson funeral home.
He Is survived by his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Kathleen House, Idabel, and Mrs. Walter Hugh Drane, Los Angeles; one brother, Joe Barnes, Gillham; five sisters, Mrs. W. L. Axton, Idabel, Mrs. Lee Crenshaw, Jadie, Mrs. Dora Laster, Eagletown, Mrs. Jet Self, Eagletown, and Mrs. Anna Hazlewood, Texarkana; and three grandchildren.

T J Barnes, of Gillham in the county of Sevier and state of Arkansas, aged 26 years, and Miss Myrtle Luttrell, of Pullman in the county of Sevier and the state of Arkansas, aged 18 years, were married on the 12th day of August A.D. 1900, in the State of Arkansas, County of Sevier.
