His father died leading an expedition to Mexico on the Llano River in 1865. After his father's death, his mother remarried.

John Honeycutt and his brother, Alfred Honeycutt appear in the local newspaper in 1874. They raised cattle and sheep. The two brothers bought land in Stephens and Shackelford Counties.

Land deeds in Stephens County, Texas in 1880 give his name as J.D. Honeycutt and John Dillon Honeycutt.

John Honeycutt married Elsa Dora Ivey before 1903 in Albany, Shackelford County, Texas.
