Hannah Hosaflook Lear
Birth: Mar. 29, 1836
Shenandoah County
Virginia, USA
Death: Dec. 8, 1920
Blair County
Pennsylvania, USA

Matriarch of the Lears of Kittanning Point

Daughter of Adam and Elizabeth [Rudolph] Hosaflook, Hannah's surname was also spelled "Hausenfluck" and "Hosaflock" during her lifetime. The spelling used herein is the same as inscribed on the tombstone of her oldest brother Joseph, and is used today by all known descendants of Hannah's father.

On Apr. 30, 1860, Hannah and Atwell Lear were married in Shenandoah Co, VA. The couple beget 10 children, 4 in VA and 6 more after migrating to their new home at Kittanning Point in PA. Besides the 8 children linked below, another child, Calvin (born abt. 1858 in Shenandoah Co, VA) is known to have accompanied his family in their migration in the mid 1860s; but Calvin was not enumerated with his family in the 1870 federal census in Blair Co, PA and is presumed to have died in the late 1860s.

When enumerated in the 1900 federal census, Hannah reported that she had 10 births, with 7 children living at that time, leaving one child unaccounted for. Although the unknown child may remain nameless, it was likely a son. (In 1949, the Lears' last surviving son, William, sent a letter to a family member saying that he had just been to Carson Valley Cemetery to visit the graves his parents and two BROTHERS.

Obituary, excerpted from Altoona Mirror, Dec. 8, 1920:

Hannah Lear died at the home of her granddaughter, May [Godfrey] Daus of Brush Mountain, near Hollidaysburg, death being due to the infirmities of old age. Her husband, John Atwell Lear, preceded her to the grave some years ago.

She was a member of the Brethren church and was held in the highest esteem by a wide circle of friends. She is the last of her family. The survivors are these children: William G. Lear and Mrs. William Godfrey of Hollidaysburg, Mrs. Thomas Rooney and John A. Lear of Altoona.

The remains were taken to the home of her son, W. G. Lear, 620 Garber Street, Hollidaysburg where funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment at Carson Valley Cemetery.
