Elvin's granddaughter Robin shared these memories of him with me in 1998.

I remember my grandfather before he was crippled, he was so active. When Reed and Frank where younger they plated ball for Silver Lake. Frank was pitcher and E. Reed was catcher. I heard they were good. After my grandfather was crippled he watched a lot of baseball and had it on his radio too.

On my grandparents farm they raised turkeys. One turkey was crippled and he would follow my grandfater around. He also raised the most beautiful yellow roses. May be that is why they are my favorite.

Elvin worked for the railroad when he and Mary were first married. They lived in a caboose for awhile. Then my grandfather took a job with the Federal Prison System. My mom told me he always loved to hear trains even after he retired, but he had to get a good job to support his new family.

Ironic isn't it that he probably could have earned a good living with the railroad, but he had to travel too much.

When he worked at the prison he guarded "Pretty Boy Floyd" and the "Birdman of Alcatraz". In fact I remember my grandfather always had a parakeet named "Pretty Boy".

E. Reed had severe arthritis and he walked with a cane.

Elvin married Mary Amanda Greston in Silverlake, Kansas on Jan. 30, 1924. To this union was born five children.
