Edward James Dunphy was born on October 12, 1909 to Dr. Henry Dunphy and his wife Helen Santos Dunphy. He attended Palmer High School and later Northeastern University. Ed married Mary Florence Glynn the daughter of Timothy J. Glynn and Katharine A. Monahan Glynn on November 27, 1937 at Holy Family Church in Springfield, Massachusetts. A child born from this union is James A. Dunphy.
Edward was a communicant, elector, and usher of St. Catherine of Siena Church. He was a member of the Holy Family Men's Club, was a parish basketball coach and former sandlot baseball coach. During World War II he served as a neighborhood civil defense warden.
He belonged to the Dante Club and the Tuesday Club, and was a charter member of Elks Lodge 61 in Springfield.
Edward worked as the Supervisor of the Redevelopment Authority which means among his many duties was to meet with community members and discuss the impact that the SRA proposed for the area. Some of the articles written in the Springfield Union discuss meetings with groups like the Knights of Columbus and public held community meetings. Many homes were upgraded through the help of the SRA. Low interest Federal Loans were made available for most upgrades.
Edward shares the same name as other community leaders. There is an Edward Dunphy that was a Senator from New York and another Edward Dunphy who was a Catholic Priest.
