One of 11 children; emigrated to the U.S. about 1887 with his parents. All his siblings but 2 were born in England. His older brother Robert was born in Canada, and his youngest sister Florence was the only sibling born in the United States.

Fred enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 14, 1898 and deployed to Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War with Battery M, 7th US Light Artillery. For additional info on one of his experiences in that war see

Fred was an artist by trade. He first married Maude E Brown on December 25, 1900 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. The marriage did not last long. They were divorced in 1901-1902 and had no children.

He married Elizabeth Simpson on Jul 12, 1903, also in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. They had a son, Nelson Frederick Winter, and a daughter, Elizabeth (Bessie) Winter. They were divorced sometime prior to the 1910 US Census.

Fred married Cecelia Margaret Fray about 1932. They had one son, Charles Haddon Winter. Fred worked for the CCC for many years and also worked as the camp cook at Camp Emerson, the Boy Scout Camp at Idyllwild, California.

Fred and his older brother Charles Henry Winter are each buried on one side of their "baby sister" Florence May Winter.
